San Diego is one of those cities that feels like it would be pretty easy to have an unforgettable getaway in even if you didn’t plan one out long-form. San Diego has good beaches, neighborhoods with plenty of buzz, opportunities for outdoor exploration, points of cultural interest and tons of restaurant options. From the dozens of miles of coastline to points of interest like the USS Midway Museum, the San Diego Zoo, and Balboa Park, the options for seeing what San Diego has to offer seem plentiful.

It’s the perfect weekend itinerary to get a flavor of the Californian city and, if this trip is your cup of tea , then go ahead.

Why Choose San Diego for a Weekend Getaway?

What makes San Diego one of my go-to’s when it’s a short trip to squeeze in? A good portion of the must-visit places are nearby enough to pack them into a relatively short time frame. We had an awesome itinerary stuffed with Downtown, Balboa Park, the Embarcadero, Coronado, and some beaches thrown in.aas

Another plus, you won’t find many ways to be bored (unless you really want to be). If you’ve got kids, they can enjoy a trip to the zoo and the beach. Couples can check out La Jolla Cove or a nice water-side dinner. Adventurous people could certainly go surfing, hiking, or kayaking.

Here’s how to make the most out of a short weekend in San Diego.

Make time to discover Balboa Park, a must-visit destination for anyone spending a weekend in San Diego. The sprawling park combines culture, history, nature, and entertainment, with an impressive collection of museums, art galleries, gardens, walking trails, Spanish-inspired buildings, and the renowned San Diego Zoo. Since there is far more to see than you can reasonably fit into one visit, choose a few attractions that interest you most and spend the rest of your time enjoying the park’s gardens, architecture, and peaceful outdoor spaces.

Visit the USS Midway Museum

Another good destination for those with an interest in history to check out when weekend visiting in San Diego is USS Midway Museum in Harbor Drive, hosted at the retired aircraft carrier of the same name. Visitors will learn about this aircraft carrier’s military and naval history by wandering its decks, learning through hands-on exhibits, and viewing retired aircraft within its structure.

You can get hands-on with a number of features of the museum so it’s an interesting tourist trap for those touring on their own, or on family outings.

La Jolla, San Diego | www.sandiego.org

Discover La Jolla

To take advantage of what San Diego has to offer with regards to beaches & outdoor excursions, the city of La Jolla is very difficult to beat. Come to La Jolla and explore the beaches and views of the coast line, swim in San Diego and catch fish & dive on through the caves or simply appreciate what nature has to offer.

With views such as La Jolla Cove due to it having a sheltered marine sanctuary that is very crystal clear, with the vast amounts of aquatic critters swimming there you really appreciate why people love visiting so much.

Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego | www.tripadvisor.com

Walk Through the Gaslamp Quarter

Spend your evening exploring San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, a lively downtown neighborhood known for its historic architecture, restaurants, shops, bars, and entertainment. After enjoying dinner at one of the area’s many eateries, take a relaxed stroll through the district and experience the energy of downtown as the city comes alive after sunset. Its walkable streets and variety of things to do make the Gaslamp Quarter a great addition to a San Diego weekend itinerary.

Embarcadero Waterfront, San Diego | www.swagroup.com

Enjoy the Waterfront

For a relaxing change of pace, spend some time exploring San Diego’s Embarcadero along the waterfront. Take a leisurely stroll beside the bay, admire the boats, visit the nearby attractions, or simply enjoy the views and fresh ocean air. When you need a break, stop at one of the waterfront restaurants or cafés for a meal while taking in the beautiful scenery. It’s an easygoing way to experience San Diego’s coastal atmosphere without having to stick to a busy itinerary.

A Simple 3-Day San Diego Itinerary

Friday: Arrive and Explore Downtown

Upon checking into your hotel, make your first night laid-back with some walks through the Embarcadero, gas lamp quarter and dinner at one of the city’s restaurants. Or, if you can arrive in the area early in the afternoon, enjoy some time on the waterfront, before making your way to the city.

Saturday: Balboa Park, Zoo and Beach Time

For starters, I recommend starting off your Saturday in Balboa Park. Since the park is quite vast, don’t attempt to experience everything in one sitting, but rather focus on a handful of sites that pique your interest. If you’re on vacation with kids, you’ll want to dedicate a lot more time to the San Diego Zoo.

Couples (and adult friends on a getaway) can spend time strolling through gardens, museums, and local districts.

Then make your way towards the water in the afternoon, heading to a neighborhood that meets your beach desire, such as La Jolla, Pacific Beach or Mission Beach.

Sunday: USS Midway, Coronado and Departure

Start your day out with the USS Midway Museum and the beautiful boardwalk area around it. Then, head over to Coronado to spend the afternoon at a more relaxed pace. Lounge at the beach, roam about, grab some lunch and take in the beautiful view, then take a ride back to the airport (or your transportation back home).

Where to Stay in San Diego

A well-chosen location for your San Diego weekend getaway makes a big difference. If you opt for something downtown, you’re likely within walking distance to the Embarcadero, the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, and the USS Midway Museum.

If it’s a San Diego beach getaway for you, look at areas like La Jolla, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, or Coronado so you’re closer to the sand and more inclined to take it easy. Families also may want a more centralized location with direct access to places like Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo.

San Diego’s vibrant food scene is another reason to include the city on your weekend getaway. With its coastal location and strong Mexican influence, the city offers an exciting variety of fresh seafood, flavorful tacos, Mexican-inspired dishes, and locally brewed craft beer. From casual taco spots and waterfront restaurants to trendy eateries and neighborhood breweries, solo travelers can easily discover new flavors while exploring different parts of San Diego.

When planning a weekend getaway, there’s no need to schedule every meal in advance. Leave some flexibility in your itinerary so you can discover local restaurants, cafés, and food spots as you explore. You might stumble upon a neighborhood favorite or find a dish you’ve never tried before, making your trip even more memorable.

Tips for Planning Your Weekend

  • Plan your must-see attractions: With only a few days in San Diego, identify the attractions and experiences you don’t want to miss before you arrive.
  • Group attractions by location: Organizing nearby attractions on the same day can reduce travel time and give you more time to enjoy each experience.
  • Make time for the beach: San Diego’s beautiful coastline is one of its biggest highlights, so be sure to leave part of your itinerary open for some time by the ocean.
  • Look into attraction passes: Multi-attraction passes can be a convenient way to visit several popular San Diego attractions while potentially saving money.
  • Keep your schedule flexible: Avoid trying to fit too much into one weekend. San Diego’s laid-back atmosphere is part of its charm, so leave yourself time to relax, explore, and enjoy the city at your own pace.
